Black spots on tomato leaves are alarming, but the pattern tells you more than the color. Septoria leaf spot usually begins as many small, round lesions on the oldest lower leaves. Each spot has a tan or gray center, a dark brown edge, and sometimes a narrow yellow halo. With a hand lens, you may see tiny black dots in the center.
That combination points toward the fungus Septoria lycopersici. It is a disease of foliage rather than a rot of the tomato fruit, but it can still reduce a plant’s harvest by removing leaves that feed ripening fruit. The useful goal is not to make damaged leaves green again. It is to confirm the diagnosis, remove sources of spores, keep new leaves dry, and protect enough healthy canopy to finish the crop.
Start with a 60-second Septoria check
Before reaching for a spray, inspect three leaves: one affected lower leaf, one leaf just above it, and one apparently healthy leaf. Look at both sides. Septoria often starts on the underside of older leaves, so checking only the top surface can make the first signs easy to miss.

Septoria leaf spot is caused by Septoria lycopersici, a fungal pathogen that can also affect related nightshade crops such as potatoes and eggplants. The immediate damage is loss of photosynthetic leaf area. As lesions join together, leaves turn yellow, then brown, dry, and drop. Septoria versus early blight

If spots are on fruit, if leaves look water-soaked and ragged after storms, or if the plant has a history of purchased transplants with symptoms, treat the diagnosis as uncertain. Where the fungus comes from and how it spreads
The main reservoir is infected tomato or other solanaceous plant debris left in or near the bed. Make the canopy dry and harder to reinfect
Water the soil, not the leaves. Fungicides: useful protection, not a leaf eraser
Fungicides are protectants. They can reduce new infections when the active ingredient is labeled for Septoria on tomatoes and applied on schedule, but they do not repair existing lesions or turn a yellow leaf green. In a dry garden with a light outbreak, sanitation and leaf-drying practices may be enough; in a rainy, humid season or a garden with a predictable history of disease, a labeled protectant can be worthwhile.
Copper and biological products
Fixed copper products and some biological products based on organisms such as Bacillus subtilis are used in integrated disease-management programs. “Organic” does not mean risk-free: copper can accumulate in soil, burn foliage when misapplied, and harm aquatic life if it runs off. Use only a product whose label lists tomatoes and the disease, and follow its rate, protective equipment, re-entry instructions, spray interval, and harvest interval.
Potassium bicarbonate is sometimes recommended for fungal diseases, but a kitchen baking-soda recipe is not the same thing as a tested, labeled agricultural product. Can you eat tomatoes from an affected plant?
Usually, Septoria leaf spot affects the leaves, not the tomato fruit itself. A sound tomato from an affected plant is generally a different situation from a tomato with a suspicious lesion, soft rot, cracking, or mold. Harvest only fruit that is firm and free of disease symptoms, wash it under running water, and discard fruit that is damaged or deteriorating.
The important exception is treatment. If you applied a fungicide or another pesticide, follow that product’s preharvest interval and any washing or handling directions. Do not decide that fruit is safe simply because Septoria is “only a leaf disease.” If the diagnosis is uncertain or the fruit is spotted, contact your local extension service rather than relying on a photograph from a different disease.

Prevention is a system, not one magic spray. You are trying to break at least one link in the disease cycle: remove infected material, block soil splash, dry foliage quickly, reduce the number of host plants, and keep monitoring early enough to respond.
Pair mulch, base watering, and airflow
Apply a clean mulch layer after the soil has warmed and the tomato is established. Straw, chopped leaves that are free of disease, or another appropriate garden mulch can reduce soil splash and keep lower leaves from contacting wet soil. Leave a small gap around the main stem so the crown does not stay wet, and replenish mulch when it thins rather than piling it against the plant.

Give plants the spacing their mature size requires, not the width of the transplant pot. A dense hedge of tomato foliage stays humid even when the soil surface looks dry. Cages, trellises, and selective removal of the lowest leaves improve air movement, but pruning cannot compensate for plants packed too tightly or a site with no drying breeze.
Water early in the day when practical. Morning watering is not a guarantee against disease—rain can arrive whenever it wants—but it gives leaves and soil more time to dry than evening irrigation. If your bed is chronically damp, solve drainage and airflow rather than simply spraying more often.

Start each season with clean transplants and inspect the undersides of leaves before bringing a plant into the garden. When a tomato plant is too far gone
A plant is worth trying to save when it still has a substantial amount of healthy green foliage, growing tips, and fruit that can mature. Remove the worst leaves, improve the canopy, and watch the newest growth for seven to ten days. If new leaves stay clean while older damaged leaves decline, your actions are helping even though the original spots remain visible.
Consider removing the plant when most of the canopy is yellow or brown, new growth is also spotted, stems are collapsing, or the plant is serving as a dense spore source beside healthier tomatoes. Pulling one failing plant can protect several productive plants, particularly in a small bed where airflow is already limited. Bag it or dispose of it according to local rules, clean the support and tools, and do not replant another tomato directly into the same debris.
