Some houseplants flower or stay compact more reliably when the pot is only modestly filled with roots. Epiphytes and plants that naturally grow in tight pockets — many Hoyas, holiday cacti, and some orchids — often prefer a snug container and infrequent upsizing. Succulents and slow growers such as snake plant or jade can sit happily for years before they need a larger pot, as long as watering still works and the plant is stable.

Mild crowding can also be a deliberate size-control tool.
